Skills fade. That is not a character flaw, it is how skills work, and it happens to instructors too. What actually stops people from returning to diving is not the gap in practice. It is not wanting to look rusty in public.
I have been diving since 1991, served as a Navy hospital corpsman, hold a Ph.D., and have taught for more than twenty years. As an IDEA Course Director, I have refreshed divers who had been out for two years and divers who had been out for twenty. The session runs

How Long Since My Last Dive Is Too Long?
There is no expiry on your certification. If it has been more than a year, a refresher is sensible, and after several years it is strongly worth doing before you travel.
Can't the Resort Just Refresh Me There?
They can, in a group, on the clock, on the morning of your first dive. Doing it beforehand means your vacation dives are actual dives, not remedial training.
Do I Need to Buy Equipment?
No. Equipment can be provided and fitted for the session. If you own gear that has been sitting for years, bring it and we will **inspect it before you rely on it.
What Does a Refresher Cost?
Cost depends on the session length, site fees, and whether you use your own equipment. Call and I'll quote your session specifically.
What If I Have Forgotten Everything?
Then we start further back, and it still takes one session for most people. Muscle memory returns faster than you expect, which is the usual surprise of the day.
